Prenatal Care

Our prenatal sessions are customized for each individual client. During the session we will focus on 5 different areas in order to optimize your body so that you are feeling your best and your body can take good care of your baby.

  1. Upper Body – During your pregnancy, your uterus is growing and is taking up more physical. It is also moving your other organs around a bit. In order to adapt, your upper body (ribs) need to be able to expand. When your upper body can move properly, there will be less inter-abdominal pressure. This will decrease the chances of diastasis recti as well as pelvic floor dysfunction.
  2. Core – A strong core is essential for a healthy pregnancy. It will help you to carry your baby correctly which in turn helps to optimize your labor. It also minimizes low back pain and “sciatic” pain.  A strong core will assist during the labor process and is also essential during recovery.
  3. Pelvis – Pelvic mobility is critical for carrying your baby and for delivering your baby. A pelvis that has proper movement is a safe place for your baby to place her head as she gets ready for birth. During your labor, a pelvis that moves properly has many options to choose from as your baby navigates the pelvic inlet, mid-pelvis, and pelvic outlet.
  4. Pelvic Floor – The pelvic floor should be strong throughout a wide range of motion. A pelvic floor that has this yielding strength has this ability to carry the baby while still being able to let go during the delivery. A hypotonic (too tight) pelvic floor is often related to an anterior tilted pelvis as well as low back pain.
  5. Movement Patterns – During both pregnancy and labor, the body needs to be able to choose from a wide variety of positions in order to take the best care of your baby. Practicing these movements can help you to feel better on a daily basis as well as giving your body options when it needs them the most – during labor.

Common prenatal issues that we are often able to resolve:

  • Low back pain
  • Round ligament pain
  • Feeling “pulled forward”
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Lack of movement
  • Sciatic pain
  • Difficulty in breathing

Specializing in Prenatal Care

a. “My wife, Pam, and I have 6 kids together. Our first daughter was born in the hospital but when my wife was pregnant with our son, she said that she wanted to try a home birth. I thought she was crazy but she was pretty determined. That birth was the start of this work. With each successive birth, I learned a bit more until I delivered our 5 baby unassisted. The midwife was there, she just didn’t need to do anything. When the opportunity came to attend the Ankrum Institute and then later to specialize in prenatal care, I knew that I had found my calling.”

C-section Care

When a C-section has been necessary, the scar tissue is designed to bring stability to the area. Unfortunately, there are often various restrictions and side effects that occur around the C-section scar. Some of those restrictions include:

  • Pain at the scar site – this can include pain on the superficial scar as well as pain deeper in the pelvis. This is often accompanied by a pulling sensation or a feeling of restriction.
  • Low back pain – as the scar places tension deeper in the pelvis, some of the fascia attaches at the low back and pulls constantly.
  • Pain during intercourse – because the scar pulls on all of the tissues around it, we commonly find tension in the lower pelvis and pelvic floor area.
  • Bladder issues – because of the proximity of the bladder to the scar, the bladder is often not able to function properly. Frequent urination as well as incontinence are often the result.

C-section scar treatment involves intervention in several different ways.

  • Micro-point stimulation helps to reorganize the scar tissue on a cellular level. We want the scar to stay strong but we also want it to have mobility so that the body can move properly.
  • Manual therapy is helpful to bring mobility to the area of the scar as well as the surrounding area. This can lead to immediate and dramatic results in the areas of incontinence, scar pain, low back pain, and pain during intercourse. We are giving the body the ability to move again.
  • Castor oil packs – these are recommended when the scar tissue has been particularly troublesome for many years.

Our work with C-section scars is often immediate, dramatic, and permanent. It is best to do the work on a preventative basis soon after the surgery. This prevents compensation patters that can lead to even more issues down the road. However, we have often worked with scars that are 20 years old or more and we still get significant results.

Orthopedic Massage

Very often, our bodies encounter some restriction and need some help to remember how to move properly. These restrictions can come as a result of a number of things including:

  • Car accidents
  • Poor posture i.e. desk job or nursing a baby
  • Surgery
  • Sports injuries

At Motility BodyWork, we understand how the body is designed to function and we work to restore that original mobility. The body needs to have balanced mobility in order to function in a pain free manner as it was designed to do. Some of the issues that we have helped to resolve include the following:

  • Sciatic pain – This pain can be quite debilitating and can often travel down the back of the legs or into the low back. Releasing the tension associated with the pain, doing strengthening exercises, and following lifestyle advice can produce significant results.
  • Shoulder pain – The shoulder is a complex joint that must complete many movements simultaneously in order to function properly. Understanding the way that these movements relate to one another and using techniques to release the muscles is the key to lasting results.
  • Neck pain – This can result from a vehicle accident, posture issues, scar tissue, or stress. Finding the underlying cause can be critical to achieving lasting results.
  • Knee pain – Unless the knee has been directly injured, knee pain most often does not originate in the knee but it is the result of dysfunction in either the foot or the hip. Resolving the underlying issues can produce significant relief.
  • Hip pain – very often stemming from surgery or perhaps from many hours of sitting, hip pain can often be resolved by releasing the tissues and a few corrective exercises.
  • Lack of mobility – When our bodies are not regularly used to their potential, that potential is often reduced. Helping the various parts of the body to regain their movement is an excellent way to prevent injury and live pain free.

About Allan

In 2002, a good friend of mine began training as an Osteopath in Canada. His work was always intriguing to me, particularly when he spoke about the organs and how they played a role in the body’s pain and in the emotions of the body. My understanding of the body up until that point was to view it as a “biological machine.” A machine that was composed of individual, isolated parts.

Fast forward about 5 years until the birth of our first daughter. My wife and I had the baby in the hospital and it went generally okay as far as hospital births go. I watched the Dr. catch my baby and I got to cut the cord. However, my wife wanted something better. She didn’t like the intrusive nature of the hospital and she told me that she was thinking of a home birth for the next one. I thought she was crazy and that this idea would go away. It didn’t.

With our next child the experience was night and day difference. The baby was born at home, in our bedroom, in a heated pool that was designed for the purpose. I was also much more involved with the birth. I watched the midwife do her work, I helped (I’m not sure that it was actually “helping”) the midwife catch my son, and saw the difference that was made by a natural, wholistic approach. In the hospital, my wife would have been a good candidate for a C-section because the labor was “not progressing.” However, a little patience combined with the skill of the midwife meant that in a short while, we had a safe, natural birth and both mom and my son were doing just fine.
